Our "outside the box" curriculum weaves Greek mythology, current news, pop culture (from Monty Python to The Sopranos), creative debate, intelligent humor, thought-provoking activities and innovative role-plays with solid mediating and conflict resolution technique. It's challenging, but just as importantly, energizing and effective.
This unique series is designed to:

Enhance productive communication and conflict skills
Bring the prospect of peace into our teens' lives, their homes, and future generations
Participants earn a certificate appropriate for use in the college or employment application process and in an official Peace Portfolio.

WHAT DO WE TEACH?
Conflict usually gets a bad rap, and we tend to question ourselves when we are unable to deal well with it. Teens, especially, live in worlds rife with conflict.
Since conflict won't disappear simply because we're uncomfortable or unhappy with it, Mid-Valley's goal is to bring a renewed appreciation for and understanding of a dispute. We fully examine the usefulness and limitations of conflict.
In addition, Mid-Valley teens will know how to facilitate a true mediation, from the introduction to the agreement writing, and will meet guest legal and mediating community members, as well as our previously trained teens.
WHY DO WE TEACH?
According to Evaluating Peer Mediation Outcomes in Educational Settings by Burrell, Zirbel & Allen, there is a substantial increase in academic performance and improved self-esteem after being trained as a mediator. Further, “The transference of conflict resolution skills extends into families and communities, presenting unique opportunities for young adults to potentially affect social change in family structures and in neighborhoods.”
Mid-Valley is looking outward and forward in just this way.
There is an empowerment in communicating our own needs, while recognizing and valuing the needs of others. Therefore, we help our participants forgive themeselves, offer up apologies when necessary, and stand their ground when it's important to do so.

Sliding scale for individuals ranges from $210-$250, siblings $170 each. Payment plans possible - just ask! Special services and reduced rates given to community youth service and other not-for-profit groups. Materials, full meals plus snacks included. Dietary restrictions are noted.
Class sizes are strictly limited. Please note the level of the material is socially and developmentally appropriate for teens aged 14 up.
